Hazel Holdaway raised her five children in Little Flower. All five children were baptized by Fr. Charles Duffey, the founding pastor of Little Flower. All five attended Little Flower School. When her oldest daughter began First Communion classes, Hazel herself chose to become Catholic. She had such great appreciation and gratitude for the what she and her children received at Little Flower that even after she left Little Flower Parish in 1963, she continued to send a check every month to Little Flower. In gratitude to her, her family and friends fund this award. The award is $150 and is awarded as a credit to tuition, and one student is recognized each quarter.
The students being recognized must possess and demonstrate qualities of service to their classmates, school, church, and/or community to the best of their ability for their particular age group. They must also possess and demonstrate qualities of respect for classmate, teachers, other adults, property, and themselves. Award recipients may be grades 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8. Students are not eligible for the award if they have received it during the any of the immediately preceding three quarters. Award recipients must be performing academically at a level appropriate for their individual abilities.
At the end of each quarter, each teacher will nominate one student. The students will be nominated by the teachers based on overall qualities of kindness, compassion, respect, and service, and their overall attitudes and behavior demonstrating these qualities. A random selection from all of the nominees will determine the winner for the quarter.
The students will be recognized at the all-school celebration after the quarter in which they receive the award. The financial transfer will also take place at that time. A formal presentation will be made at the Fall Scholarship presentastion or at a parish Mass in August, historically on the day of the parish picnic in August, for all the recipients from the previous school year.
